Weekly 10-20 people with special needs from three agencies come to awa to perform animal care duties. Awa is also the only regional animal shelter that has a program for special needs young adults.
Students work along side awa staff and instructors to learn practical skills before graduating. Awa partners with camden county community college's veterinary technician program. In total, 3,500 students participated in one of our humane education programs. During the academic year we host weekly "service projects" for high school students. Humane education & community outreach - awa reaches out to schools, elder care facilities, businesses and local townships, to engage them in the importance of our work. Through planning and flexibility, awa is able to double the care capacity and save more lives. To save so many pets, we recruit, train and manage over 130 foster care volunteers. We are proud of how many dogs, cats and bunnies we are able to help because awa is physically one of the smallest antiquated shelters in our community: we have only 32 adoption kennels and space to house 60 cats and kittens. Donations from individuals in the community are vital to providing medical care, behavioral rehabilitation and spay/neuter to each pet before his/her adoption. Pet sheltering & adoption - awa operates an adoption center and pet shelter in voorhees, nj, adopting out over 2,500 dogs, cats and rabbits each year. The direct impact of this project was the decline in number of pets going to municipal shelters and being euthanized. In addition to spaying/neutering pets, our veterinary team provides over 8,122 pets with basis veterinary care and vaccinations, awa's vets on wheels program - taking vets to the pets - resulted in over 500 pets receiving their first ever vaccines and veterinary care. A majority of these surgeries were subsidized through grant and donation support thus allowing awa to provide sterilization services for those pets at the greatest risk of impoundment and euthanasia: outdoor cats, pit bull dogs and pets living in the city of camden, nj. Owners of mixed-breed dogs can learn their pet’s breed history through a blood test or a do-it-yourself saliva test available at AWA. In the past, a mutt’s heritage was a matter of guesswork and conjecture, but DNA testing is available at AWA and gives more precise information. Jerry Springer isn’t at the Animal Welfare Association doing paternity testing, but with Father’s Day approaching, many mixed breed dogs (and their owners) wonder who their daddies are.
